Hi!
I am Jiya. My name means ‘heart’ and there can be no better way to describe how I think! An aspiring psychologist, I always strive to strike a balance between my brain’s rationality and my heart’s sensitivity. I see the world through a psychological and sociological lens.
My passion for developmental psychology blossomed within the lecture halls of the University of California, San Diego where I embraced the challenge of a dual degree in Developmental Psychology and Cognitive and Behavioral Neuroscience. The interdisciplinary nature of my courses equipped me with the skills needed to investigate the social and cognitive mechanisms that govern child development and motivated me to contribute to this field through systematic, well-designed, and empirically supported research.
My research interests focus on how children’s understanding of the world—across object properties, social group dynamics, and language—develops, and what factors help or hinder these processes. I am also drawn to examining how various social and environmental factors like culture-specific standards, varying peer interactions, and parent-child speech impact children’s conscious and non-conscious learning of social norms, group biases, and linguistic abilities like word meanings and pragmatic inferences.
I hope this website gives you an idea of who I am and what I am passionate about.
